This is an
SEM micrograph of a bacteria colony
forming. The bacterial colony is well developed, and
is showing the initial development of a biofilm. Some of the round Cocci
type bacteria are suspended in an adhesive matrix. The relative maturity
of this matrix varies across the photograph. The matrix is developed
enough that the bacteria are clearly bound to each other, and to the
substrate below, but the top layers of individual bacteria are still
clearly visible.
