Biofilm
on Silicon MEMS Device
This is an
SEM micrograph of a biofilm forming on
a silicon substrate. The lower region
is the silicon structure. The structure has been completely encapsulated
by a biofilm, which is the mat-like structure in the top part of the
photograph. The round nodule in the center of the photograph is a white
blood cell. It is possible that such white blood cells "found" the
silicon device, and orchestrated the formation of the biofilm. The biofilm
formation rendered the device non-functional. |
